FAFSA 2027–28 Basics

By GradClear Editorial · Updated · 5 min read

What FAFSA actually does

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is how students and families apply for federal grants, work-study and loans for a given award year. Schools and states may also use FAFSA data. It is not a loan by itself and not a refinance application.

2027–28 availability

Federal Student Aid and NASFAA materials indicate the 2027–28 FAFSA is already available. Deadlines vary by federal, state and institutional calendars — missing a state deadline can cost grant aid even if a federal window remains open. Always confirm dates on studentaid.gov and your school’s financial aid site.

What GradClear will not do

We will not host a fake FAFSA form, ask for your FSA ID, or estimate your SAI with unofficial shortcuts presented as official. Our calculators help later with repayment arithmetic after you already have balances and rates.

After you file

Watch for school aid offers, verify loan entrance counseling and Master Promissory Note steps on Federal Student Aid when you accept Direct Loans, and keep PDFs of submissions. Private loans, if any, are separate contracts.

How to use this guide with GradClear tools

Open the related calculators, enter figures from your own servicer statements or lender quotes, and change one assumption at a time. Educational pages explain vocabulary; calculators perform arithmetic locally in your browser. GradClear is not studentaid.gov and cannot enroll you in a plan.

Advertisers help keep GradClear free. Ads are labelled. Affiliate links, when present, use rel="sponsored". Empty tracking tags mean homepage links without commission parameters.

GradClear provides general information only — not personalized advice, not an official IDR quote and not a forgiveness decision. Verify primary sources on Federal Student Aid and CFPB pages before you act.

Practical checklist

Write the decision question in one sentence (for example: “Can I afford a fixed $X payment for Y years?”). Separate trusted inputs (servicer balance, written refinance APR) from guesses. Run base, pessimistic and optimistic cases. Note the most sensitive variable. Bring that summary to your servicer or a licensed adviser.

When a marketplace ad disagrees with your spreadsheet, ask which fees, capitalization events, cosigner rules or federal benefits were excluded from the marketing example.

If you hold both federal and private loans, label them separately. Mixing them in one refinance without understanding benefit loss is a common expensive mistake.

Record-keeping tips

Save dated PDFs of servicer statements, FAFSA submission confirmations, IRS tax transcripts used for IDR, refinance disclosures and any forbearance or deferment notices. Update scenarios after job changes, family-size changes or new legislation summaries from Federal Student Aid.

Do not paste Social Security numbers, FSA IDs or account passwords into third-party calculators that do not need them. GradClear’s tools never ask for those.

Include as-of dates whenever you quote a balance or rate to someone else. Student loan rules — especially income-driven repayment and newer RAP frameworks — do not follow blog calendars.

Context for “FAFSA 2027–28 Basics”

Prefer primary sources: studentaid.gov for federal loans, your promissory note and private lender contract for private loans, and CFPB consumer tools for complaint patterns and glossaries. If a coworker, relative or viral post cites a dollar figure or forgiveness promise without a date or source, treat it as a rumour until you confirm it.

Households that document assumptions tend to spot spreadsheet errors earlier. A one-page assumptions list next to a calculator screenshot is often enough for a productive call with a servicer or nonprofit counselor.

Re-check official links on this page before you rely on any figure in a binding decision such as refinancing away from federal status, consolidating, or committing to a multi-year budget built only on a blog estimate.

Limitations you should assume

Calculators on GradClear use simplified monthly compounding on a single balance unless a tool says otherwise. Real portfolios may include multiple rates, subsidized and unsubsidized portions, accrued interest waiting to capitalize, and plan-specific payment formulas.

Federal guidance published after our lastUpdated date can supersede summaries here. NASFAA and Federal Student Aid announce FAFSA and repayment changes on their own schedules. When in doubt, the government site wins.

Nothing on GradClear is a substitute for reading your Master Promissory Note, private loan agreement or an official Income-Driven Repayment application.
